“In places like universities, where everyone talks too rationally, it is necessary for a kind of enchanter to appear.” – Joseph Beuys

The Dweller of the Field

Art is a holistic experience; it is not just object and color, or form and gesture. There is no beginning or end to art. It is a durational performance with an infinite depth that reaches beyond time.  Art is a house built from the bricks laid by our ancestors which we can only add to. It is a harmonic voice that sings to historic, contemporary, and possible future society.
It is my duty as an artist to create change through the work I manifest. I demonstrate the life of an artist: a life beyond studio, beyond walls, where even shoveling snow can be done artfully. Look to southern Maine and see what will be the greatest manifestation of this practice. It will be visible in enchanted fields and forests, speckled with tiny houses, studios and gardens, raised by our hands. A menagerie of animals will play to our muse and rekindle the lost spiritual connection to our original nature.  Through an abundance of creativity in all aspects of life we may discover deeper meanings about our selves, our society, and our place in this world.
Education is a critical component to this practice and teaching is in fact the greatest art of all. Through demonstrations, workshops and explanations, technique and concept are passed down to a future generation of artists. Not only is the individual act of creation valued but the transference of that knowledge has more of a legacy than the object of creation itself. We must change the way we educate each other; we must enter nature’s creative classroom.
There is a unique voice inside each person; an art-form that echoes beyond the realm of the gallery, (or the institution) waiting to be heard.  Our voices, our art, can seep and fester into the minds of oppressors. We can inspire flowers to rise through constricting concrete and blossom. Humanity will be redeemed through art and activism. What matters is not what rules we followed, but how we made a better world, regardless of the rules.
